Do you want your child to be the next Tom Brady or David Beckham? Gotta start ‘em young. With school back in session and football in full swing, it’s time to think about where they fit best. We’ve got a list of the best high schools for sports in Phoenix! Here’s the breakdown…
Great Hearts Academies are located all across the Valley. They have an incredible number of athletic activities at each campus and are constantly promoting their athletic-scholars. What’s even more incredible is their high involvement rate of both boys and girls at 40% for both sexes. These schools are smaller than the large public powerhouses so all students have an opportunity to play!
Verrado is a public school in Buckeye, Arizona. It has 1,605 students in grades 9-12 and has 19 different sports to choose from. They compete at the Division II and III levels depending on the sport.
This school has 21 sports to choose from and its athletic department has an overall approval rating of 4.2 out of 5. Desert Vista is located in Phoenix, but is a part of the Tempe Union High School District.
Located in Glendale, Apollo is one of the top athletic schools in the area. They have 1,880 students in grades 9-12. In years 2005 to 2007, Apollo won the 4A state championship for men’s basketball 3 years straight.
Centennial High School is located in Peoria and the varsity football team won three consecutive 5A-II division championships outplaying larger 5A-I teams including Brophy Prep, Pinnacle, and long-standing powerhouse Hamilton in years 2006, 2007, and 2008.
Chaparral High School is located on the border of Phoenix and Scottsdale right off Scottsdale Road. Their football team sends students to top universities every year. They consistently rank in top lists for their athletics! Here are their NFL alumni.
Hamilton is located in Chandler and its football teams have been consistently successful. They won Arizona Division 5A State Championship in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. Hamilton has enjoyed some national attention through its players such as Christian Westerman, Gerell Robinson, Kerry Taylor, current NFL Arizona Cardinals Dontay Moch, current NFL Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs and MLS star Tony Cascio currently playing for the Colorado Rapids.
Liberty is located in Peoria and is part of the Peoria Unified School District. It is 21 sports to choose from and its athletic department has an overall approval rating of 4.3 out of 5. About 50% of their students participate in these programs.
This school is located in Mesa and has the option of 21 different sports. Mountain View was included on Sports Illustrated’s 2005 list of Top 25 High School Athletic Programs in the Nation. It has received over 50 state titles in its 40 year history.
Cactus is located in Glendale and is part of the Peoria Unified School District. It has 22 sports to participate in and a 4.4 out of 5 rating. It has had many successes in each of its sports and continues to prove itself.
Mountain Pointe is located in south Phoenix but is technically a part of the Tempe Union High School District. They have 22 sports to choose from and about 33% of their students participate. Despite their low rate of participation compared to other schools, they have been the state champions in those sports more than 30 times in the last 10 years and runner-up around 25 times.
Which of these schools do you think is the best? Could it be Mountain Pointe with their multiple state titles in the last ten years or how about Hamilton with their claims to fame?
