Just to the west of Glendale and Peoria lies one of the Phoenix metro area’s well kept secrets. The appropriately named city of Surprise is filled with brand new homes for sale and a number of extremely popular attractions, from zoos to professional baseball.

One of the unique things about living in Arizona is always being aware of where the nearest pools are to avoid the heat. As firm believers that a refreshing swim is one of the best things in life, we always brag about the huge aquatic center when showing homes for sale in Surprise. The annual pool pass is exclusively open to Surprise residents, and the center offers everything from children’s water slides and adult lap swimming (even open in December and January for those bold enough to brave the *82* degree water). Many residents take advantage of the inexpensive aerobics, zumba, and swim classes offered at the center.
Surprise Stadium is the younger, sometimes forgotten, brother to the enormous Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. But the Surprise Recreation Campus athletic facility baseball field is no small space; it can hold over 10,700 people! Home to the spring training seasons of the major league Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers, the stadium also hosts the local MLB Golden Baseball League’s Surprise Saguaros. Grab some popcorn and bring the family!
Slightly southwest of Surprise lies the White Tank Mountain Regional Park, a must see area full of rolling mountains, canyons, and waterfalls (not to mention, the largest regional park in Maricopa County). Some of the best hiking in Arizona is hidden amongst the park’s 30,000 acres. One of the most beautiful trails is Ford Canyon, a 7.4 mile hike located near the town of Waddell. While it is not the easiest trek, the rewards for your efforts are spectacular; you’ll come across an abandoned dam, a couple cliffs over the wash, and a waterfall. The only thing we recommend to your hiking crew aside from plenty of water is to bring some cash as the $6 parking fee does not take credit cards.
For over 30 years the Wildlife World Zoo has slowly been accumulating rare wild animals for care, observation, and safe keeping. Now it can boast that it has the largest collection of wild species in all of Arizona! It is a privately owned preservation park that has plans to expand even more- 15 additional acres to be exact. People of all ages from every part of the state flock to this haven to see and touch hundreds of rare species of reptiles, insects, mammals, and birds. And the best part (aside from being licked by a giraffe, of course)? They’re open 365 days a year from 9-6pm!
(PS: We hear the zoo even has an all-white albino alligator!)
While not quite as exciting as a wildlife safari, the new form of college education, Communiversity, provides a unique opportunity for adults to find academic courses from various community colleges and universities- all in the same place. With options for online, hybrid, or in-person classes and community college pricing, Communiversity allows anyone on any budget to pursue higher education and even offers some master’s degrees. This special school is only located in Surprise and Queen Creek so its addition to the city of Surprise increases the values of all homes in the area.
