Here is our list of places to visit in Phoenix during the holidays!
At this holiday light display, you will see about two-and-a-half million twinkling lights strung throughout the zoo. You may also encounter a number of animated displays. ZooLights includes a carousel, a stingray touch tank, and camel and wagon rides. Look out for an orchestrated light show that happens every hour. Kids and adults both will enjoy exploring the various animal-themed displays. Apple cider, hot chocolate, and other holiday snacks are available at kiosks located throughout the zoo. Tempe Festival of Lights Parade
The Festival of Lights Parade takes place on Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe as well as other holiday celebrations. This parade happens every year on the day after Thanksgiving and features marching band, clowns, up to 40 floats, and other novelty units. It starts down Mill Avenue on 3rd Street, turns on 7th Street, and proceeds through Centerpoint Plaza. The plaza has a Christmas tree lit up during ceremonial lighting at the end of the parade. After all this, a special guest comes out to celebrate and spread holiday cheer (he wears a red suit and has a white beard). To get more information check out the downtown Tempe website.
Ballet Arizona’s The Nutcracker
As one of the top productions in the country, more than 150 performers fill the stage for Phoenix’ premier annual production of The Nutcracker. The performance feature top-notch costume and set design and the beautiful score is performed by The Phoenix Symphony. If you are new to The Nutcracker, this classic holiday ballet tells the story of young Clara and her magical Nutcracker Prince. Under direction of Ib Andersen, Ballet Arizona puts one of the best-reviewed productions of the show. For more on this season’s performances click here!
Glendale Glitters Spectacular Weekend
The Glendale area kicks off the holiday season with its weekend-after-Thanksgiving festivities, but the fund doesn’t end there. The city features concerts, foods, fun activities, and horse-drawn carriage rides, every Friday and Saturday night until Christmas. The downtown area is covered with nearly a million lights so if you can’t go to the weekend festivities, go check out the decorations anyway! Gingerbread Nights and Winter Wonderland are included in the celebrations. The finale of the event is held in January which is known as the Glitter & Glow Block Party. The party features live music, holiday-themed treats, and huge hot air balloons placed across the busy downtown quarter. For more on this spectacular event, hit up the website.
CitySkate Ice Rink at CityScape
Nothing says winter in the city like a freshly surfaced ice skating rink decorated with twinkling holiday lights. That’s what visitors will find at the annual CitySkate at CityScape Phoenix event, which arrives in downtown Phoenix every year in December. Guests can rent ice skates and take a spin around the rink, snack on holiday treats like cookies and hot cocoa, enjoy the twinkling lights, and listen to the sweet sounds of holiday carolers – all in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The ice skating rink is located at the CityScape center and stays open until January. The ice skating rink is conveniently located near downtown shops and dining.
