With summer quickly approaching here in Arizona, we’re all looking for a way to have fun and stay cool doing so (emphasis on the latter). Lake Pleasant, the Phoenix metro area’s largest lake and major recreation location, is the perfect place to bring the family! Located in north Peoria along the Maricopa and Yavapai county borders, this expanded reservoir has over 100 miles of shoreline, featuring 450 picnic sites, 165 camping sites, seven miles of trails, four overlooks, and a full-service marina equipped to handle 1,000 boats. Take the family out for a day of fun in the sun!
Opened in July 2000 as part of an international network of Challenger Centers for Space Science Education, the Challenger Space Center in north Peoria is Arizona’s premiere destination for space and science education and fun. Focused on continuing to inspire space exploration and related scientific pursuits, the Center offers simulated space missions, an indoor planetarium, space camps, lectures, telescope classes, and space storytelling for all ages!
Encompassing 145 total acres and consisting of a main stadium and 12 practice fields, the Peoria Sports Complex is home to spring training for both the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners. The complex also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, such as concerts, art shows, car and RV shows, bike races, outdoor weddings/receptions, private parties, group events, and charity fundraisers. Utilized year-round by local and national youth and adult baseball tournaments and championships, the Peoria Sports Complex can always provide a day of fun for the family!
With a planned 18 (and a completed 9.5) miles of trail through Peoria, the New River Trail System runs parallel to the New River that cuts through the city. While the trail also aligns with the Loop 101, it still remains secluded enough for joggers, bikers, walkers, runners, and equestrians to encounter coyotes, jackrabbits, and hummingbirds, and pass by beautiful mesquite and Texas ebony trees as well as soft pink oleanders and bougainvillea. The trail also runs alongside some of Peoria’s favorite local shopping, dining, and entertainment venues, making it a fun and active way to reach your destination!
Located inside the Rio Vista Community Park, the Rio Vista Recreation Center is designed to be a versatile and family-friendly facility. The Recreation Center features a public gymnasium, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, walking track, and so much more! Offering a number of amenities and programs that are intended to engage residents and promote healthy lifestyles, the Rio Vista Recreation Center is the perfect place to take the family for a day of relaxation and recreation.
