Hitting your senior years is far different than it was in the past. While it still means that your life is changing, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are slowing down. In fact for many, hitting this age means having a kind of freedom that they may not have experienced in a while. If you’re looking to move to Arizona, this might be the perfect time to look at active adult communities. Far from being retirement homes, these are the types of places that can give older adults a new lease on life.

Understanding this type of community means understanding the purpose of why the communities were built. Retirement communities have existed for decades, but they may not be ideal for those who are still looking to stay active and independent. These active adult communities are a direct repudiation of that idea, built with an understanding that those over 55 still want to keep an active lifestyle.
As such, one can look at active adult communities as places that provide both living and recreational amenities targeted at their community’s demographics. All of these communities offer a variety of ways for people to keep active after they have retired.
As you might expect, there are many positive elements of living in a 55+ community. These communities are definitely made with their residents in mind, so the amenities built within the communities tend to reflect the wants and needs of an older crowd. Active adult communities in Arizona also tend to place a great deal of emphasis on community events, which ensures that there is always something to do.
The downside to these communities tends to be over-regulation. They have very active HOAs and it’s difficult to make any changes to the community itself. There also tend to be fairly strict rules about who can live in the area and even about visitors, which can make things a bit more difficult for those who live in multi-generational homes. Despite this, the vast selection of these active adult communities in Arizona means you’re bound to find something that works perfectly for you.
The best communities in Arizona all tend to have a few things in common. First and foremost, they cater to the real wants and needs of their residents. They also tend to provide excellent atmospheres for community events, allowing residents to find ways to become more active on their own terms. While each of these places do tend to offer similar amenities, it’s important to remember that each does tend to be a better fit for certain types of residents. Figuring out what to look for in a 55+ community typically requires evaluating your interests and needs with the amenities and benefits they offer to see if they line up.
Sun City West provides its residents with a truly astonishing number of potential recreational amenities. It’s not just about golf here – there are also fantastic tennis courts, pools, and even miniature golf courses in the community. Sun City West also raises the bar by providing its residents with four high-end recreational centers.
Active residents also have access to an extraordinary number of community events. If you’re looking to get out of the house and socialize, few communities can beat Sun City West. This is definitely a place that has put a huge amount of focus on keeping its residents active.
Pebblecreek takes a somewhat different approach to activity than some of the other active communities. While it certainly does have a lovely golf course, the community tends to place a premium on other activities. It’s got a full ballroom, for example, and a number of hobby studios that can help to keep the mind active in addition to the body.
One of the crown jewels of Pebblecreek is the pool complex. Not only is there plenty of space to relax, but there is even a separate grandchildren’s pool for those who invite family to visit. It’s a great place to keep active and to keep up with family-time.
Sun City bills itself as a the original fun city, and there’s a great deal of truth to that statement. This is a community that has it all when it comes to recreation and it makes access incredibly easy. No matter what you’re looking to do, there’s a good chance that you will find it here.
One of the most impressive parts of the community is how well it has tailored the individual amenities to the 55+ crowd. This is a perfect place to continue the hobbies that were started earlier in life as well as one to have new adventures.
Sun Lakes is another community that takes a rather unique approach to activity. While there are all of the requisite fitness activities – including a great golf course – it seems that the real focus of this community is the clubs. There are dozens of clubs active at any given time, giving residents a chance to keep up with their favorite hobbies while making new friends.
This is a truly unique community. If you’re looking to find new social activities, it’s perhaps the best place to look. Whether you want to spend time walking through the unique landscapes or you want to find others who share your interests, you’ll feel at home here.
Province is all about staying active. It’s a community that can rapidly make you forget that you are in Arizona, centered around a fantastic lake. Around that lake are dozens of great opportunities for activity and socialization, including interest groups for virtually anything you can imagine.
Province also keeps its residents busy. There is a strong mix of fitness and social activities in the community, so there’s always something to do. If you’re looking for diversity in activities, this might be the first place to look.
In addition to being active, many in the 55+ community want a chance to spend their retirement years in luxury. That’s why so many of the communities in this area really pull out all of the stops when it comes to the amenities. While some of the amenities are meant to help keep residents active, many are simply meant to make life just a little more comfortable.
These communities tend to feature high-end homes and higher-end amenities. You’ll find restaurants, lounges, and libraries in most of these communities. Perhaps most importantly, though, you will also find a general sense of relaxation that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Victory aims to be the first word in luxury and it makes a compelling argument for accomplishing its mission. This is a community that’s so luxurious that it actually has its own working vineyard. All of the homes in the area are fantastically crafted and you’ll find some of the most-desired in-home luxuries in each of these homes.
At the same time, Victory at Verrado manages to temper that luxury with a real feel of community. There are plenty of activities here and all residents tend to feel very welcome. It’s the type of relaxation and luxury that only comes with a high-end community.
This community is a very good example of what one should expect from an active adult community. Like many others, it’s largely centered around the golf course. What makes it really active, though, is the focus on fitness. Sun City Grand not only gives its members access to great equipment, but encourages them to use those services.
This community also checks off all the boxes for being an incredibly luxurious community. Taking just a quick look at the floorplans for the houses in the community will show you that the community features some of the most sought-after amenities in the region.
In addition to providing great in-home amenities, the community also provides luxurious touches in its community centers. From libraries to lounges, there’s always a place for residents to relax. In many cases, luxury comes in the form of having pleasant surroundings in which to spend one’s time.
Activity doesn’t just mean physical activity, though. In many cases, it means engaging with the community. They have an incredibly full calendar of events, as well as plenty of opportunities for its residents to stay active even when they’re not doing something with the full community. The is one active adult living community that really keeps its residents moving.
Terravita’s approach to luxury is perhaps the most common in the region. A great deal of what makes it work is the way the homes are built – floorplans from high-end builders, always customized with the desires of the homeowners in mind. Every home in the community is the type of dwelling to which people spend their lives hoping to retire.
Luxury here also means convenience. Everything is a short kart ride away from the neighborhoods, so one never even needs to drive a car. Life is simply easier when everything is easily accessible.
One of the best things above the variety of active adult communities in Arizona is that one doesn’t need to be wealthy to enjoy them all. While there are certainly higher-end communities out there, there are also some very affordable communities that still provide excellent living experiences. These communities still have amazing amenities and lovely homes, but they’re priced in a way that puts them in reach of a larger group of people. For those with more limited retirement funds, these communities can be a fantastic place to live.
One of the most appealing reasons to live in Dreamland Villa is the fact that the community really sticks to its goals. It wants to be a great place for those over fifty-five to live, and it consistently takes steps to make sure that’s so. While it might not have a professional golf course or a grand ballroom, it has fantastic facilities and an even better sense of community spirit.
This community has a fair number of fitness amenities like tennis courts and walking trails, but the real draw is being around those of one’s own generation. The community goes to great lengths to ensure that the neighborhood stays safe and that residents are happy with their choice to move in.
One of the most interesting things about Sunland Village East is that it really doesn’t feel like one of the more affordable communities. There’s clearly a great deal of love and care that’s been put into creating this community, along with some smart money management that has allowed for great amenities in the area.
This is a community that feels prestigious without necessarily having the usual price tag attached. Residents can stay active and socialize without having to worry quite as much about money. It’s truly an amazing place.
Sun Village is another affordable community that feels like it should cost more than it does. It is a gated community that claims to offer a piece of paradise, and most homeowners would be hard-pressed to disagree. It even has its own golf course, which isn’t typically a given in more affordable communities.
Sun Village has all the luxuries you’d expect from a high-end community. While there might not be as many big names, there are certainly quite a few unique perks to living here. It’s a great example of getting the most for your money.
The truth is that many active adult communities tend to center around the same basic sets of amenities. There are a few, though, that have some truly unique extras that set them apart from one another. Some of these amenities are relatively simple, but they can be make-or-break additions to potential residents. Others, however, are so important that entire communities are built around them. Below are a handful of communities that have some truly unique amenities for their residents.
Pickleball is quickly becoming a major sport, especially among those over fifty-five. This tennis-like game requires quick reflex and fast movements, but it’s better suited towards those who are more concerned with accuracy than speed or power. It’s a staple at communities across the country, so it should come as no surprise that it shows up at Trilogy.
Trilogy at Vistancia has a number of pickleball courts. In fact, the games can get quite competitive in the community. If you love the game and want a place to hone your skills, this may be the amenity you have to check out.
If you’re a woodworker or craft hobbyist, you know that having a good workspace is a necessity. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find a reasonable amount of space in most active adult communities. That is perhaps why Sun City Festival has put in the effort to create this truly massive hobby space. It’s exactly what a dedicated hobbyist needs to hone his or her craft.
The huge space also gives hobbyists a chance to work with others in the community. Whether you are sharing tips or collaborating on projects, it’s a great way to get to know your neighbors. This one-of-a-kind studio is ideal for anyone who likes to work with his or her hands.
Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Arizona. Not only does the state have miles of hiking trails, but it has such a diverse geography that one can hike trails of multiple types without ever having to leave the state. While many active adult communities tend to have walking trails of some type, Trilogy at Wickenburg Ranch’s Pioneer Trails really stand out.
The community has thirteen miles of true hiking trails. These trails vary in difficulty, so they range from a lovely place to walk to the kind of trails that challenge even frequent hikers. That makes the community the perfect kind of place for those who prefer building up to a challenge as well as for those who want to make sure they stay on top of their hiking games.
As you can tell, there are many types of communities out there for active adults. Whether you need unique amenities, luxury living, or just a place to call home, there are plenty of active adult communities out there to choose from to meet your needs.
