How Do I get started in Real Estate?

Before you can go out and begin selling properties, you need to build a strong foundation in the real estate industry to prepare you for a successful career.

To get ready for your real estate career, you should be sure to:

Check Your State’s Requirements

Each state has its own set of requirements for what’s considered a licensed real estate agent.

Individual states have their own real estate agent regulatory bodies, and each sets its own requirements on:

  • Age
  • Application process and fees
  • Background checks and fingerprinting
  • Continuing education
  • Education requirements
  • Exams
  • Pre-licensing courses and post-licensing requirements
  • Reporting of any criminal history

Make sure to check these before signing up for a program or attempting to take the exam.

Take a Pre-Licensing Course

No matter where you plan to get your real estate license, you will have to take some sort of pre-licensing courses.

The amount of time you spend in these courses, as well as their content, varies from state to state. In Arizona, applicants must complete at least 90 hours of instruction in a classroom or online before sitting for an exam.

You can take these course in-person, or, as we suggest, online through an accredited, state-recognized real estate school

Take the Real Estate Licensing Exam

During your real estate courses, your instructors should explain how to schedule, register, and pay for your state’s licensing exam.

These exams are computerized and come in two parts: a national exam that covers general real estate practices and principles, and a state-specific portion covering the real estate laws in your state.

Each part of the licensing exam is scored separately, and you must receive a passing grade on both parts to pass the test. You can retake the test, but each state has different requirements for how many times you can retake the test and how far apart those attempts must be.

Get Practical Experience

Nothing gives you a better idea of what to expect as a real estate agent than working alongside someone who’s already in the business.

The school where you take courses may be able to hook you up with a local professional, or you can find a mentor on your own. If you’re thinking of joining a brokerage, you may be paired up with one of the other agents in the group.

How Can I Obtain My Real Estate License Online?

In Arizona, you can obtain your real estate license online by completing at least 90 hours of pre-licensing education at an online school approved by the Arizona Department of Real Estate-approved school.

Once you have completed your coursework, you must pass the licensing exam.

Pros of Getting Licensed Online

Getting your real estate license online offers many advantages for busy people, but choosing to study for your real estate license online isn’t without disadvantages.

Some of the advantages of getting your real estate license online include:

  • Study on your schedule – Online schools allow you to complete lessons and coursework whenever you have time as long as you meet the posted deadlines.
  • Balance work and school – Going back to school when you’re already working can be a challenge with scheduling. Getting your real estate license online can make it easier.
  • Can be more affordable – Online classes can be less expensive than in-person classes, making a real estate license more affordable for many people.

Cons of Getting Licensed Online

Some disadvantages to obtaining your real estate license online include:

  • Less engaging – Exam prep on your own can be difficult for some people, and online learning requires you to be self-motivated.
  • Fewer personal connections – If you never meet your instructors or fellow students, you can feel disconnected from your learning.
  • Requires reliable internet – For people who don’t have reliable access to a computer or the internet, studying online can be a challenge.

Should I Take Real Estate Classes Online?

Getting your real estate license online isn’t for everyone.

For many aspiring real estate agents, though, the ability to take real estate education courses online can open up the opportunity to their dream career.

Here are some reasons you might want to consider taking an online real estate course:

You Already Have a Full-Time Job

Many in-person schools make having a full-time job and going to school difficult. Online courses allow you to study and complete lessons early in the morning, late at night, or even on your lunch break.

You’re Self-Motivated

Taking courses online means you’ll need to be organized and motivated to do your work even when you could be doing other things. If you love sticking to a schedule and checking things off your to-do list, attending realtor school online might be for you.

You Have a Family

Juggling school and a family isn’t easy, but being able to study anytime, anywhere makes it a little less stressful. If you want to get your real estate license and be able to tuck your kids into bed each night, consider online real estate courses AZ.

There are No In-Person Real Estate Courses Near You

If you live far from the nearest approved real estate licensing school, studying in-person requires relocation. By studying online, you aren’t limited to choosing a program that’s within commuting distance.

What is a Good Online Real Estate Course?

A good online real estate course is one that’s approved by the Arizona Department of Real Estate, provides a high-quality education, and prepares students to pass the state licensing exam.

To find the online real estate course that’s right for you, consider these factors:

  • Student recommendations – What do current and former students say about the education they received?
  • Experienced faculty – The program you choose should be taught by licensed real estate agents and brokers, not just academics.
  • Check the history – Has the school been around for a while? Have a large number of real estate agents completed the program? Find one that’s got a solid history for the best results.
  • Cost – Of course, you need to find an online real estate course that’s not going to break the bank.

What is the Best Online Real Estate School?

There are a lot of online real estate schools approved by the ADRE. Finding one that’s right for you means finding the right mix of coursework, recommendations, accessibility, and cost.

What Makes a Great Real Estate Agent?

To become a successful real estate agent takes a unique blend of personal qualities, skills, and knowledge. You have to be friendly, willing to negotiate and have a passion for helping your clients navigate the real estate process.

Want to be a great agent? Here are some qualities that can help:

Having Top-Notch Communication Skills

Being in real estate is all about building relationships and communicating between buyer and seller.

Whether on the phone or in writing, a great real estate agent has to constantly keep all their clients in the loop and effectively communicate crucial information.

On the other side of communication is listening.

A great real estate agent takes the time to really listen to their clients – their thoughts, their needs, and their concerns – and file the information away for later. Buying or selling a house puts a lot of money on the line for people, and they want to feel truly heard by their real estate agent.

Being Client-Focused

Being a great real estate agent means keeping the client first in mind, every time.

Taking the time to get to know clients, what they’re looking for in a property, and what their needs are can help them feel supported and understood. This makes them more likely to trust the agent’s judgment and creates a happy client-agent relationship.

Knowing Your Market

Selling homes is all about knowing what features will sell for great prices in each location.

A real estate agent who truly understands the geographic area they work in, and what people shopping look for in a property, can be the difference between a home that sells quickly and one that sits for months.
